About.

I make the abstract clear before a team commits to the build.

I studied English, photography and fine art at Rhodes University. It sounds like a scenic route into enterprise product design, but the through-line is fairly direct: look closely, find the structure, explain it clearly and give people something concrete to work with.

ABOUT / CAREER

Experience

From pre-dot-bomb to design systems.

My career started in the late-1990s information-superhighway gold rush and survived the crash that followed. Since then I’ve moved from creative direction and hands-on web design into UX, product design and complex enterprise systems, usually somewhere between the people defining the problem and the people who have to build it.

ABOUT / THROUGH-LINE

Where I’m useful

When the problem is still fuzzy.

I turn competing requirements, assumptions and constraints into something the team can see, discuss and decide on.

When everyone sees it differently.

I give product, business and technology a shared picture of the work, so they can disagree in one place and agree on the same thing.

Before you get to the expensive part.

I use prototypes, real content and technical guidance early enough to expose problems while they’re still relatively cheap to fix.

ABOUT / Remote Work

Remote, properly.

I’ve worked with distributed teams across Africa, Australia, Europe, India, the UK and the US.

Remote work for me predates Zoom, Covid and the hybrid tug of war. I was coordinating clients, designers and developers across continents long before distributed teams became normal.

ABOUT / TEACHING

Teaching

Lectures and online courses, 2005 – present

Teaching keeps me honest: explain the idea plainly, make the example concrete and answer the question at hand.

I lectured in Copywriting for the Web at AAA School of Advertising in Johannesburg from 2005 to 2006. More recently, I’ve taught and written courses in UX Design and Testing and Digital Product Management, with participants from organisations including Apple in Cupertino and the University of Washington, Seattle.

Pac-Man-style course graphic reading: “It’s crowded online. Get through to the people who matter.”

Retro robot course graphic reading: “Jargon is for G#%!@?! ROBOTS!”

About / Testimonials

Working with me

Things people say:

“Tim is exactly the kind of person you want on your team. He is highly experienced, a pleasure to work with, quick to embed himself, and consistently makes things easier for those around him through his clarity, structure and collaborative approach. By identifying critical product blind spots and creating practical artefacts, he equipped the team with reusable frameworks for improving both current and future products.”

– Celestine “Zie” Ngulube, Head of Design, Absa CIB

“Tim is the most encouraging and inspiring team leader I have worked for. He is objective and decisive, yet fair and kind. If you need someone to pull an existing team together, or build a new one, and manage stakeholders with clarity and assurance, I highly recommend Tim.”

– Melody Vermaerke, Service and Product Design Lead, Helm

“Tim’s UX abilities are top-notch. His communication, creativity, attention to detail and delivery focus made him a pleasure to work with. When timelines were under pressure, he managed expectations, explained the trade-offs and delivered.”

– Mario Andron, Principal Engineer, AWS

“Whenever a brief calls for copy with soul, Tim is our go-to human. His innate sense of brand means he can quickly absorb and articulate a client’s language, transforming even the driest corporate spiel into a warm, conversational engagement.”

– James Mentz, Founder, Tenacity Works
